Unpacking and Inspection

Carefully unpack and inspect all contents.

  1. Remove speaker from packaging, including foam inserts and protective bags.
  2. Inspect for any shipping damage to the cabinet, drivers, or grille.
  3. Verify contents: Left and Right speakers, Owner's Manual, Warranty Card.
  4. Keep original packaging for future transportation or service.

WARNING! Speakers are heavy; lift with care using both hands. Avoid placing fingers near driver cones.

Placement and Installation

Proper placement is critical for optimal sound performance.

  1. Position speakers on stable, level surfaces (shelves or stands).
  2. For stereo listening, place speakers at ear level, 6-10 feet apart, forming an equilateral triangle with the listening position.
  3. Ensure at least 2 inches of clearance from rear and side walls to allow proper bass port operation.
  4. Angle speakers slightly inward (toe-in) toward the primary listening area.
  5. Keep speakers away from heat sources, direct sunlight, and excessive moisture.

CAUTION! Do not place objects on top of speakers. Ensure stands or shelves can support the weight.

Specifications

Connecting to Your System

Connect speakers to your amplifier or receiver using high-quality speaker wire.

  1. Turn off and unplug all audio components before making connections.
  2. Strip 1/2 inch (12 mm) of insulation from each wire end.
  3. Unscrew the binding post caps on the rear of each speaker.
  4. Insert bare wire into the hole in the post shaft, then tighten the cap securely. Ensure no stray wire strands touch the opposite terminal.
  5. Connect the positive (+) terminal on the amplifier to the positive (+) terminal on the speaker (typically red). Connect negative (-) to negative (typically black).
  6. Repeat for the second speaker, maintaining consistent polarity.
  7. Double-check all connections for security before powering on.

Tip: Use 16-gauge or thicker oxygen-free copper wire for runs up to 50 feet. For bi-wiring (if supported), remove the metal jumper bars between the terminals.

Operation and Controls

Speakers are passive and have no onboard controls. All volume, tone, and source selection are managed by your amplifier or receiver.

Grille Removal: The fabric grille is held by magnets. Grip the edges firmly and pull straight off. To reattach, align and press gently until it snaps into place.

Break-in Period: Allow up to 20 hours of moderate-level playback for drivers to reach optimal performance. Sound quality may improve over this period.

Optimizing Sound Performance

Adjustments should be made at the amplifier or source component.

  1. Balance: Use your receiver's balance control to ensure equal volume from both speakers.
  2. Tone Controls: Adjust bass and treble to suit room acoustics and personal preference. Start with flat settings (12 o'clock).
  3. Room Correction: If your receiver has an auto-setup or EQ feature (e.g., Audyssey, YPAO), run it with the microphone in your listening position.
  4. Bass Management: For home theater, set speaker size to "Small" and crossover to 80 Hz if using a subwoofer.
  5. Experiment with Placement: Small adjustments in distance from walls and toe-in angle can significantly affect soundstage and bass response.

Care & Maintenance

Unplug amplifier before cleaning speakers.

  1. Cabinet: Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn marks, slightly dampen the cloth with water. Do not use solvents or abrasive cleaners.
  2. Grille: Use a soft brush or vacuum with a brush attachment to remove dust. Do not wash or immerse in liquid.
  3. Drivers: Do not touch the tweeter dome or woofer cone. Use a can of compressed air to gently remove dust if necessary.
  4. Terminals: Keep clean and free of oxidation. If needed, disconnect wires and clean terminals with a dry cloth.

CAUTION! Never apply liquids directly to the speaker. Keep away from extreme temperatures and humidity.

Troubleshooting

SymptomPossible CauseCorrective Action
No sound from one speakerLoose or incorrect wiringCheck all connections at amplifier and speaker. Ensure wires are securely fastened and polarity is correct.
Distorted sound at low volumeAmplifier clipping or damaged driverReduce amplifier volume. Check if distortion persists; if so, contact Bose service.
Weak or thin bassImproper placement or phase issueMove speaker farther from wall. Check that both speakers are in phase (+ to +, - to -).
Buzzing or hummingGround loop or interferenceEnsure all audio components are plugged into the same AC circuit. Check for nearby sources of EMI (transformers, motors).
Rattling noise from cabinetLoose internal component or object in portInspect bass port for obstructions. If internal, do not open cabinet; contact Bose service.

Reset: For system-level issues, power off all components, disconnect speaker wires, wait 60 seconds, and reconnect.
