Installation

Unpack and inspect contents. Place speakers on stable surfaces or mount using optional stands.

  1. Position Speakers: Place speakers on stands or shelves with rear angled drivers facing a reflective wall (see Placement Guide).
  2. Connect Equalizer: Connect equalizer INPUT to your preamplifier's TAPE MONITOR OUT or PREAMP OUT. Connect equalizer OUTPUT to your power amplifier INPUT.
  3. Connect Speakers: Run speaker wire from your amplifier's outputs to the 901 speaker terminals. Observe polarity (+/-).
  4. Power Equalizer: Plug the AC adapter into the equalizer and a wall outlet.

WARNING! Speakers are heavy; lift with care using two people. Ensure amplifier is off during connections.

First-Time Setup

Power on your system; follow these steps for initial calibration.

  1. Set Equalizer to System: Engage TAPE MONITOR switch on your receiver/preamp if using TAPE MONITOR loop.
  2. Adjust Levels: Play music and use the equalizer's left/right level controls to balance speaker output.
  3. Engage Equalizer: Ensure equalizer is ON (bypass switch out). The 901 system requires the equalizer to be active for proper sound.
  4. Fine-Tune Placement: Adjust speaker distance from walls and toe-in angle for optimal soundstage (refer to Placement Guide).

CAUTION! Never operate the speakers without the active equalizer connected and powered on.

Specifications

Controls and Settings

Active Equalizer Front Panel: POWER indicator, LEVEL controls (Left/Right), BYPASS switch.

Equalizer Rear Panel: INPUT L/R (from preamp), OUTPUT L/R (to power amp), AC ADAPTER jack.

Operation: The equalizer must be in the signal path and powered for the 901 speakers to sound correct. Use the LEVEL controls to balance channels. The BYPASS switch allows instant comparison to demonstrate the equalizer's essential role.

Connecting to Your System

Connection is critical. The equalizer must be between your preamplifier and power amplifier.

  1. Turn off and unplug all components.
  2. Connect cables from your preamp's output (Tape Monitor Out or Preamp Out) to the equalizer INPUT.
  3. Connect cables from the equalizer OUTPUT to your power amplifier's input.
  4. Connect speaker wires from amplifier to speakers, observing correct polarity.
  5. Plug in equalizer AC adapter. Power on components in sequence: source > preamp > equalizer > power amp.

Tip: Use high-quality interconnects and speaker wire for best performance.

Equalizer Operation

The active equalizer is integral to the 901 system's performance.

  1. Power: Ensure the equalizer is powered (POWER LED lit).
  2. Bypass Function: Press the BYPASS switch to hear the speakers without equalization (sound will be thin and unbalanced). Release to restore proper sound.
  3. Level Adjustment: Use the LEFT and RIGHT level controls to match the output of both speakers to your listening position.
  4. System Integration: If your receiver/preamp has a TAPE MONITOR function, engage it to insert the equalizer into the signal path.

WARNING! Do not attempt to use the speakers without the equalizer. This can cause poor sound and potentially damage the speakers if driven hard.

Speaker Placement Guide

Optimal placement is key to the Direct/Reflecting design.

  1. Distance from Wall: Place speakers 12 to 24 inches from the rear wall. The rear drivers need a surface to reflect sound from.
  2. Angling (Toe-In): Angle speakers slightly inward, aiming just behind the listener's head for the widest soundstage.
  3. Height: Ideally, the center of the speaker should be at or near ear level when seated.
  4. Symmetry: Place speakers symmetrically relative to room boundaries and the listening position.
  5. Experiment: Small adjustments in distance and angle can significantly affect imaging and spaciousness.

Note: Avoid corners or placing objects directly in front of the rear-facing drivers.

Care & Cleaning

Unplug equalizer before cleaning. Use a soft, dry cloth for speaker cabinets and grille. For stubborn stains on grille cloth, consult a professional cleaner. Do not use liquids or solvents on the wood finish.

CAUTION! Do not remove grille cloth unless necessary; handle drivers with extreme care. Never vacuum the driver cones.
