Safety Precautions & ESD Protection

WARNING: This equipment contains hazardous voltages. Disconnect AC power before servicing.

  1. Electrical Safety: Use an isolation transformer when servicing the power supply section. Verify all voltage measurements with respect to chassis ground.
  2. ESD Protection: Handle all circuit boards by the edges. Use a grounded wrist strap and anti-static mat when handling sensitive components.
  3. Component Replacement: Replace components only with specified parts. Solder carefully to avoid damaging printed circuit boards.
  4. Reassembly: Ensure all screws are tightened to specified torque and all shields/covers are properly reinstalled.

WARNING! The Acoustimass module contains large capacitors that can retain a charge. Allow sufficient time for discharge after disconnecting power.

Disassembly & Reassembly Procedures

Procedure for accessing internal components of the Media Center.

  1. Power Down: Unplug the AC power cord and all connected cables.
  2. Remove Top Cover: Remove the (4) Phillips screws from the rear of the chassis. Slide the top cover rearward and lift off.
  3. Remove Front Bezel: Release the (4) plastic clips securing the front bezel. Gently pull the bezel forward and disconnect the display ribbon cable.
  4. Access Main Board: Remove the (6) screws securing the main board shield. Lift the shield to access the main PCB, power supply, and optical drive.
  5. Reassembly: Reverse the procedure, ensuring all cables are securely connected and no wires are pinched.

CAUTION! The optical pickup is sensitive. Avoid touching the lens. Handle the laser mechanism with care.

Technical Specifications

Block Diagrams & Schematics

Refer to included fold-out diagrams for detailed system architecture.

Main System Block Diagram: Shows signal flow from inputs (DVD, Tuner, Aux) through the DSP/Decoder, to the amplifier stages and speaker outputs.

Power Supply Schematic: Details the switched-mode power supply (SMPS) generating +5V, +12V, +/-22V rails. Key components: Fuse F1 (3.15A), Bridge Rectifier BR1, PWM Controller IC201, Main Transformer T1.

Amplifier Section: Schematic for the satellite and module amplifier channels. Key ICs: Power Op-amps for satellites (U501, U502), Dedicated module amplifier IC (U601).

Test Modes & Diagnostics

Accessing the Service Menu for diagnostics.

  1. With the unit OFF, press and hold the '1' and '4' buttons on the front panel.
  2. While holding, press POWER on the front panel. Release all buttons when "SERVICE" appears on the display.
  3. Use the numbered buttons to navigate test modes:
    • Mode 1: Speaker Test (cycles audio tone to each channel).
    • Mode 2: Display Test (illuminates all segments).
    • Mode 3: Optical Drive Test (checks laser focus and tracking).
    • Mode 4: Tuner Test (checks FM/AM reception).
    • Mode 5: Voltage Check (displays key supply voltages).
  4. Press STOP to exit any test mode. Press POWER to exit the Service Menu entirely.

Note: Service Menu settings are not saved. A full power cycle resets to user mode.
